A man has been charged after a security guard was stabbed during a robbery at a Sargent Avenue grocery store.
Winnipeg police responded to FreshCo in the 600 block of Sargent Avenue just before 1:30 p.m. on Friday following reports of a commercial robbery. Officers found a 24-year-old male victim suffering from a serious upper-body injury. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, later upgraded to stable. The suspect fled before police arrived.
Police said the man had entered the store, selected a number of items, and was attempting to leave without paying when he was confronted by store security. A physical altercation followed, spilling outside the business, where the suspect allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the guard in the upper body before fleeing with stolen merchandise.
Investigators identified the suspect located him in the area of Sherbrook Street and Ellice Avenue just before noon on Saturday.
Peter Edwin Morrison Black, 23, has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. He remains in custody.
