Winnipeg’s Northern Super League (NSL) club is getting a new purpose-built stadium at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex, thanks to funding commitments from all three levels of government.
The league announced the news on Tuesday, with Vancouver-based SixFive Stadiums leading the development of the modular stadium at the Waverley Street facility.
“This is the kind of moment you dream about as a young player,” said Desiree Scott, co-founder and vice-president of community and player experience for Winnipeg NSL.
“Growing up in Winnipeg, playing on a pitch like this with a professional women’s team to cheer for was something I could only imagine.”
The venue will feature FIFA-grade turf, upgraded lighting and modern amenities for both professional players and the local soccer community. It will hold approximately 4,000 fans and offer pop-up food vendor options on game days.
“The NSL is grateful for this funding, which will ensure our players have modern, professional facilities that help Canada attract and retain the best players in the world,” said Christina Litz, president of the Northern Super League.
“Beyond elite competition, our league is committed to developing homegrown players and inspiring greatness on and off the pitch.”
The federal government is investing up to $2.1 million into the stadium project, with anticipated funding to include $750,000 from the province, $600,000 from the city and $5 million from the Northern Super League.
