The City of Winnipeg is offering support to residents affected by an extended storm-related power outage that began Sunday evening.

The city on Tuesday announced the opening of a reception centre at the Corydon Community Centre — River Heights site, 1370 Grosvenor Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. today. Services available include mobile phone charging stations, free Wi-Fi, emergency mental health supports, bottled water and snacks.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service firefighters will be going door-to-door in affected areas to check on residents who have been without power since the storm, with some outages expected to reach 72 hours. Firefighters will be wearing WFPS uniforms and carrying photo ID, prioritizing River Heights-area residents based on the areas hit hardest.

The city is continuing to work with Manitoba Hydro to clear branches and trees in affected areas.

“About 1,500 customers remained without power Tuesday morning,” Hydro said in a release. “Crews are working to safely restore power as quickly as possible, but the scale of damage is such that outages will likely continue into Wednesday afternoon.”

Hydro says all storm-related outages in the Westwood area were restored Monday evening.

The Crown corporation is also asking the public not to approach crews as they need room to work safely, and there are still safety hazards in the area.

“Stay at least 10 metres away from downed power lines and anything they touch. Call 911 if you see a downed power line.”
