Winnipeg police officers will have an increased presence in and around Winnipeg bars, lounges and other licensed establishments over the coming months as part of a new enforcement push.

Police say the efforts will target gang members and those involved in or associated with organized crime, with priority given to those who pose the greatest risk to public safety.

Officers will conduct walk-throughs and proactive patrols to enforce Section 32(1) of The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act, which allows for the removal of individuals whose presence creates a risk of violence.

Under Manitoba’s liquor regulations, licensed establishments can prohibit gang identifiers and may refuse entry to, or remove those patrons who don’t comply.

“Licensees are encouraged to ensure staff are familiar with their establishment’s policies and to apply those policies consistently and fairly,” police said in a statement.
