A North Dakota man is facing charges after fleeing the Emerson port of entry and leading Manitoba RCMP on a high-speed chase along Highway 75.
Emerson RCMP were notified by the Canada Border Services Agency on the evening of September 12 that a man had fled the port of entry. Officers learned the suspect had entered Canada from North Dakota and stopped at Emerson, but sped away when directed to secondary screening.
Officers from multiple RCMP detachments, along with the Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET), responded to Highway 75 to intercept the pickup truck. Morris RCMP attempted to pull the vehicle over south of Morris, but the driver didn’t stop.
St-Pierre-Jolys RCMP then tried to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 75 and PR 210 by blocking the highway. The suspect manoeuvred around the police cars, drove through the ditch, narrowly missed an officer and continued north on Highway 75.
Officers were able to box in the vehicle roughly 30 minutes later on Highway 75, where the driver was removed from the vehicle and arrested. A loaded handgun was found on the front passenger seat, and different types of ammunition were seized from inside.
A police vehicle was damaged during the pursuit, but no officers were injured.
Scott Weinberger, 44, of North Dakota, has been charged with multiple offences and remains in custody.
“This was a dangerous situation involving an armed male fleeing the port of entry and travelling at high speeds toward Winnipeg,” said Superintendent Chris Hastie, district commander, Manitoba East District.
“We are now working closely with CBSA, law enforcement in the United States and our colleagues within RCMP Federal Policing to determine why the male fled the border.”
