Harvest Manitoba has received a $100,000 investment from Maple Leaf Foods for its planned Manitoba Food Transformation Centre.

The centre is being developed to address the growing demand for food support and large amounts of nutritious food going to waste.

“Right now, there is nutritious food in Manitoba that could be feeding our neighbours but is instead going to waste because we don’t have the capacity to process it,” said Vince Barletta, president and CEO of Harvest Manitoba, in a statement.

“This generous investment from Maple Leaf Foods moves us closer to changing that and getting more good food to communities across the province.”

Harvest says the new centre will have dedicated processing and storage capacity, ensuring it can accept more surplus and donated food that can’t currently be used efficiently.

This latest contribution marks an early private-sector investment as Harvest pursues additional funding from government, private-sector partners and the public. The organization is currently selecting a site for the facility, which could be fully operational by 2028.
