The Friends of Lower Fort Garry are bringing back their popular annual ghost tours this October, offering candlelit walks through some of the oldest — and most haunted — buildings in Manitoba.

Now in its sixth year, the tour features new stories, scares and hauntings, covering everything from Windigo demon legends to the lingering presence of former maids and the site’s history as Manitoba’s first penitentiary and asylum.

The 90-minute tours visit several buildings, including the Big House, where Hudson’s Bay Company managers and their families once lived; the Furloft, home to a sleeping apparition in the attic; the Warehouse, which once housed Manitoba’s first penitentiary and asylum; and an Indigenous camp featuring a fireside tale.

“With our real and true ghost stories at Lower Fort Garry, we look forward to giving you a creepy adventure,” said FoLFG president Carolyn Weiss.

“You may be a skeptic when you start but we’ll have you convinced by the end of your walk that Manitoba’s best historic fort is full of spirits from times long ago. Just make sure you don’t take one home with you. ”

Tours run every Friday and Saturday night in October at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and are suitable for all ages. Guests can grab a drink before or after at the Thirsty Beaver Tavern, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available, including complimentary hot chocolate for all tour participants. Tickets are available at folfg.com.
