The Winnipeg Jets’ statistical history has been officially merged to include both eras of the franchise, the club and the NHL announced Thursday.
The change means the Jets’ record book now spans their original run in Winnipeg (1979-96), their years as the Atlanta Thrashers (1999-2011), and their current stint in Winnipeg since 2011-12. The now-inactive Coyotes franchise will retain only its Arizona-era history (1996-2024) and will not be folded into the Jets’ records.
The update is already reflected on NHL.com, the NHL app, and the Jets’ official website.
“Statistics and records are more than numbers — they capture the milestones, achievements and memories that define the history of our game and the communities that support it,” said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, in a release.
The merger reshuffles several franchise records. Dale Hawerchuk becomes the all-time leader in goals (379) and points (929), while Thomas Steen takes the top spot in assists (553). Current forward Mark Scheifele — previously the franchise leader in goals and points, with 372-535—907 — will have a shot at all three records in 2026-27.
“Today’s announcement is meaningful for our organization, our alumni and generations of Winnipeg Jets fans,” said Mark Chipman, executive chairman of True North Sports & Entertainment and the Winnipeg Jets.
“The Jets teams from 1979 to 1996 helped build the identity and tradition that we proudly carry forward today.”
The Jets are set to open their 16th season since relocating from Atlanta in 2011 when they host Boston on October 2, adding to the 17 seasons the original franchise played in Winnipeg after joining the NHL in 1979.
