A large-scale mural celebrating St. Boniface Hospital’s history and connection to the community has been unveiled on the building’s Taché Avenue-facing front.
Created by Canadian muralist Emmanuel Jarus, the artwork draws on the natural landscape of the Red River Valley and the legacy of the Grey Nuns, who arrived by canoe more than 150 years ago and founded the hospital. Standing over 60 feet tall and covering 3,200 square feet, it ranks among Manitoba’s largest art installations and one of the first large-scale murals in St. Boniface.
The project builds on a 2024 partnership between St. Boniface Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, and the Higher Learning Foundation that produced the “Thank You Trades” mural on the hospital’s river-facing side. Funding from St. Boniface Hospital Foundation supported the new installation.
“This mural is a wonderful example of the impact of arts at St. B., helping create a welcoming, healing environment for patients, families, staff, and visitors,” said Foundation CEO Karen Fowler.
Paul Turenne, the hospital’s senior corporate affairs and engagement officer, said the piece reflects the community’s connection to the land and its commitment to spaces that support healing and wellbeing.
“We live in the Red River Valley, and the Red River Valley lives in all of us,” said Turenne.
