Scott Gillingham says he will bring back the City of Winnipeg’s fall street cleanup in 2027 if he is re-elected mayor.
The program, which swept and picked up leaves and debris from streets across the city, was cut in the 2015 budget to save money.
“We need to keep improving basic maintenance in Winnipeg. Clearing hundreds of streets isn’t free, but I believe a basic service like the fall street cleanup is absolutely worth the cost,” Gillingham said, pointing to the five Neighbourhood Action Teams launched last term to fix potholes, signs and sidewalks.
Gillingham estimates the program will cost less than $2 million a year starting in 2027, assuming all existing Neighbourhood Action Teams are fully committed to supporting the cleanup.
Winnipeg voters head to the polls on October 28.
