A 29-year-old Edmonton man is in custody after Winnipeg police say three seniors in their 80s were defrauded of more than $37,000 in grandparent scams.
Police say the victims received calls from someone posing as their grandson, claiming he had been arrested and needed bail money. A man then attended each victim’s home to collect cash, and in one case gold and silver coins. The incidents happened between August 17 and 22.
The third victim checked with family, learned it was a scam and called police. Officers found a man in a vehicle matching the suspect’s description, and a search turned up evidence linked to all three victims.
Daniel Edward Warren is charged with fraud over $5,000, two counts of fraud under $5,000, and possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl. He remains in custody.
