Scott Gillingham is promising improved measures to keep Winnipeg cleaner and get replacement garbage and recycling carts to homeowners faster.
The incumbent mayoral candidate was talking trash on the campaign trail Thursday, where he also pitched a sixth Neighbourhood Action Team dedicated to downtown.
Gillingham said the new team would receive immediate referrals of 311 calls about garbage, graffiti and other cleanup priorities, and would have a direct line to the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and Exchange District BIZ to coordinate with their cleanup teams.
Gillingham also pledged to add at least 200 lockable public garbage bins downtown, adding to the more than 120 of the new-style bins unveiled along Portage Avenue and Main Street last fall.
He would also set a target of replacing damaged, lost or missing household garbage and recycling carts within one week, or one regular collection cycle.
“If there’s garbage piling up, we should deal with it quickly,” said Gillingham. “If a homeowner needs a replacement cart, they shouldn’t be waiting weeks. These are simple services, and residents should be able to count on them.”
Winnipeg voters go to the polls on October 28.
