Sturgeon Falls in Whiteshell Provincial Park has reopened following the completion of safety upgrades prompted by the drownings of two children earlier this year.
The Manitoba government closed the trail and viewing areas in July and has since installed fencing around viewing areas, updated warning signs and created a new portage for canoeists and kayakers.
The new signage warns visitors about drowning hazards, slippery rocks and strong currents, while fencing is intended to keep people away from hazardous areas.
“The new fencing, signage and portage have created safer spaces for families, visitors and paddlers to experience Sturgeon Falls while preserving the natural beauty that makes this area so special,” said Allison Baker-Thiessen, owner of Nutimik Lodge, in a statement.
“These upgrades will help protect Manitobans and provide greater peace of mind for everyone who visits the site.”
The trail and viewing areas are now open to the public.
