Police Continue to Investigate Stabbing

Winnipeg Police CrestA man pepper-sprayed and stabbed Friday night has been released from hospital.

Police responded to the 500 block of Portage Avenue around 11 p.m. after receiving reports a man had been stabbed.

The victim, in his mid-twenties, was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.

The victim told police he was attacked by four unknown males. Suspect descriptions are unavailable at this time.

Arrests Made in Fatal Shooting

Winnipeg police logoPolice have identified two men allegedly involved in the shooting of 29-year-old George Prieston on Thursday.

Raymond Ducharme, 25, and Shawn Poitra, 25, of Winnipeg have been arrested and face charges of first degree murder, fail to comply with recognizance and cruelty to animals.

Both have been detained in custody. Investigators are still searching for the weapon used, which witnesses described to police as a military-style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine.

The colder weather is helping crews make good progress fighting the wildfires in Manitoba and Ontario.

No new wildfires were reported Friday, but evacuation orders remain in effect. The improving conditions have allowed travel and burning permit restrictions in eastern Manitoba to be lifted. Continue Reading

Summer is usually the slowest time of year for food banks, but Winnipeg Harvest’s shelves are stocked a little fuller thanks to Catelli Foods.

Approximately 6,780 boxes of pasta were delivered to Winnipeg Harvest, equalling  27,120 servings of food for those in need.   Continue Reading

Arrests Made in Two Police Pursuits

Winnipeg Police CrestPolice have made arrests for two separate incidents of robbery leading in police pursuits Thursday evening.

The first pursuit happened at 6:15 p.m. outside CF Polo Park Shopping Centre, where police responded to reports of a man with a gun.

The suspect was confronted by security personnel in the mall when he pulled out a handgun. He then fled on foot to a parking lot on Jack Blick Avenue, confronted a female driver and forced her from her vehicle before speeding off.

Fatal Shooting in Winnipeg’s West End

Winnipeg Police CrestA man was shot and killed early Thursday evening in the West End, police say.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Wellington Avenue after receiving reports a man was shot in his home.

George Prieston, 29, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. He was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Prieston’s dog was also shot and later had to be put down due to its injuries, police say.

After announcing the addition of a fourth show in Winnipeg, Brooks now holds the record for most tickets sold for a concert event at the MTS Centre.

In one hour and nine minutes, Brooks sold over 46,500 tickets, beating Elton John’s previous record of 33,500 tickets.

New Domestic Violence Law in Effect May 15

Changes to the Domestic Violence and Stalking Act come into effect May 15, providing better access to protection orders to assist victims.

The act will make it easier to access protection orders, which will now consider the seriousness and urgency of the circumstances. It will also take firearms out of the hands of suspected abusers, Justice Minister Heather Stefanson said in a statement.
