WINNIPEG — Radio host Dave Wheeler has been fired from 92.1 CITI following controversial comments he made this week regarding the transgender community.
The host of “Wheeler in the Morning” made the comments on Monday comparing transgender people to actors who “pretend to be different things.” Wheeler was suspended on Tuesday and Rogers Media has since ended its relationship with him.
WINNIPEG — Three’s a crowd for the Power 97 morning show with the addition of Phil Aubrey to the mix.
Better known as simply Philly, Aubrey was most recently part of the “Wheeler in the Morning” gang on 92.1 CITI.
Aubrey will be joining Joe Aiello and Randy Parker, but will be no stranger to the 97.5 FM frequency. Before joining CITI, Aubrey, Dave Wheeler and Rena Jaeresigned from Power 97 in 2012 amid a contract dispute.
A popular Winnipeg radio personality has been suspended after two controversial music videos were posted to social media on Monday.
Dave Wheeler, host of “Wheeler in the Morning” on 92 CITI FM, was not on the air Tuesday after “Transcona Girls” and “North End Boy” were uploaded by the station to YouTube. Social media was quick to pounce, calling the videos “racist,” “sexist,” and offensive to the city’s indigenous community.
The songs accompanying the videos were created and originally aired two years ago, but the animation was recently produced. The content includes such lines as, “North End daughters really like to stab and steal your bike, and the Wolseley girls with their hairy pits, they keep their girlfriends warm at night.”
The other video includes this line: “Well there’s holes in the wall and blood stained red, I try to fall asleep but I got no bed, I go outside try not to end up dead, thank God I’m a North End boy.”
The upcoming season of the Winnipeg-made comedy series “Sunnyside” will have two notable guest appearances.
Children’s musician and entertainer Fred Penner and local broadcaster Dave Wheeler will make cameos in two episodes of the original City series.
Penner, who plays a barber, will be included in the “Sunnyside Tours” episode, airing on Sunday, November 1 at 7 p.m. CT Wheeler (92 CITI FM and Wheeler in the Morning) plays himself and also Poot Dandridge, a can collector who provides radio commentary on the happenings in Sunnyside.
