A group of 30 Winnipeg middle school students met with Mayor Brian Bowman on Monday to present ideas for a temporary art installation to be built in the Spence neighbourhood this summer.

The idea is part of YouthStudio 2018, a pilot project designed to empower local youth to become stewards in their communities. The youth took part in a two-day crash course in landscape design and related topics at HTFC Planning & Design in May as part of their preparations. The students brainstormed ideas to activate a space at the corner of Sherbrook Street and Cumberland Avenue.

Five graduating Winnipeg high school students were awarded the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership at a special ceremony held at city hall Thursday morning.

Each of the five scholarship winners received a $1,000 scholarship to recognize their dedication to making their community a better place to live, according to a release from the mayor’s office.

Winnipeg city councillors should no longer be able to claim alcohol as an eligible expense, Mayor Brian Bowman says.

Under the current Councillor Ward Allowance Fund Policy, alcohol is an eligible expense when purchased as part of receptions for constituents, business contacts, representatives of other levels of government, municipal associations, and international delegations or visitors.

WINNIPEG — Mayor Brian Bowman is taking heat on Instagram after posting photos meeting with Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss.

Bowman made the post on Monday with the caption: “Pleased to meet w/ Dani Reiss (President & CEO) of @canadagoose re #Winnipeg operations and our growing connections to the Canadian North.”

The winter wear manufacturer opened up a second factory in Winnipeg last November. The company also operates a factory on Bannatyne Avenue in the Exchange District.
