WINNIPEG – Christine Sinclair always has the spotlight on her, but the veteran captain says soccer fans should keep an eye on her young, talented teammates.
When Canada’s national women’s squad takes on Costa Rica Thursday in a friendly at Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field, the roster will include a pair of 21-year-old best friends who earn good paycheques playing with high-calibre French clubs.
Winnipeg-born soccer star Desiree Scott will lead the second annual KidSport soccer camp named after her.
Scott will mentor kids in the sport November 7-8 at the UNITED Health & RecPlex at the University of Winnipeg.
“Last year was a massive success and I had an awesome day on the field with all the girls that came out to become ‘Destroyers in the making’. I’m looking forward to this year’s camp which will be even bigger and better with lots to learn and enjoy,” the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist said in a release.
Winnipeg soccer star Desiree Scott will mentor young girls looking to enter the sport through an inaugural KidSport soccer camp.
“Giving back is something I pride myself on doing and working with kids in the community is something I truly enjoy so I am looking forward to getting on the pitch with the girls and getting them to experience a little taste of what it’s like to train as a professional soccer player,” Scott said in a release.
WINNIPEG — The turf at Investors Group Field has been transformed from a football field to a soccer pitch for Thursday’s Canada vs. U.S. women’s friendly.
The two national teams completed their last training session Wednesday afternoon under a cloudy sky before the rain began.
“I think it’s going to be the Desi (Desiree) Scott show tomorrow,” Canada head coach Jon Herdman said during a news conference. “It’s a proud moment for the team — we’ve all got a massive smile on our face, because the local girl gets to come home.”
Scott is Canada’s Winnipeg-born midfielder and a product of the Notts County Ladies in England. The former University of Manitoba Bison has been the star attraction this week as she makes the media rounds to promote the event.
