Simplot Growing Manitoba Potato Plant with $460M Expansion

Agricultural company Simplot is spending $460 million to expand its Manitoba-based operations near Portage la Prairie.

Construction will begin this spring to increase the size of the potato plant from 180,000 to 460,000 square feet. The expansion will also create 87 new full-time positions.

Five people were taken into custody in Portage la Prairie Wednesday on the suspicion of drug trafficking.

RCMP executed a search warrant at a home on 9th Street NW at around 4:10 a.m., where they seized six firearms, ammunition, cocaine, fentanyl, a ballistic vest and a quantity of Canadian currency.

A manhunt is on for a 28-year-old man wanted in connection with a stabbing in Portage la Prairie on Sunday.

Just before 6:30 p.m., a 25-year-old man arrived to the local hospital with a stab wound. RCMP say he was at a home on Tupper Street North when an altercation broke out.

A 47-year-old man was sitting in the idle vehicle on Spruce Bay at around 10 p.m. waiting to pick someone up. Police say that’s when an unknown male approached him with a gun and struck the victim before taking off in the vehicle.

Three men have been charged after an RCMP canine found them cowering in a shed following a robbery and assault in Portage la Prairie on Sunday.

At around 4:35 a.m., a female was attacked by three masked men in front of a home on Oak Bay in Portage la Prairie.
