Postmedia Network Inc. will close six small-town newspapers and reduce print publication of four more, while slashing 10 per cent of its total salary outlay through staff layoffs and voluntary buyouts by the end of August.

The company confirmed it will shut down the Camrose Canadian and Strathmore Standard in Alberta and the Kapuskasing Northern Times, Ingersoll Times, Norwich Gazette and Petrolia Topic in Ontario.

Construction on a new six-stall Tesla Supercharger Station will soon begin in Portage la Prairie.

Winnipeg-based real estate development company Shindico has partnered with the automobile maker to bring the charging station to a parcel of land they own at Portage’s Westfield Crossing shopping centre.

RCMP Logo VehicleAn RCMP officer who shot a suspect in the buttocks outside of Portage la Prairie last summer won’t be charged.

The incident stemmed from a pursuit of an armed man who stole a vehicle in Headingley and fired shots on June 27. He travelled west on the Trans-Canada and later collided with a police vehicle. He later fled into a potato field with a firearm after being spotted hitchhiking on the highway.

Manitoba to Replace Aging Overpass West of Portage la Prairie

The Manitoba government will replace the aging Portage la Prairie overpass along Highway 1 on the west side of the city.

The bridge has been struck several times by trucks, often forcing its closure while engineers can assess the recent bout of damage. The bridge is currently only accessible in one direction, with some traffic being diverted through Portage.

Five people were taken into custody in Portage la Prairie Wednesday on the suspicion of drug trafficking.

RCMP executed a search warrant at a home on 9th Street NW at around 4:10 a.m., where they seized six firearms, ammunition, cocaine, fentanyl, a ballistic vest and a quantity of Canadian currency.
