WINNIPEG — A new poll commissioned by the Amalgamated Transit Union 1505 shows the majority of Winnipeggers want their city councillors to commute by bus.

Probe Research found 82 percent of respondents felt it was somewhat or very important for councillors to use Winnipeg Transit on a regular basis.

Winnipeg Police CrestWinnipeg police are looking for a woman accused of assaulting a German exchange student and a Winnipeg Transit driver.

Police say the 18-year-old German student was crossing Portage Avenue near Vaughan Street Wednesday night when the suspect began to follow her. As the woman got closer to the intersection, she was slapped twice and had her phone, wallet, identification and personal papers stolen.

A new poll commissioned by the union representing Winnipeg Transit employees says the majority of citizens want to see the provincial government share the cost of transit with the City of Winnipeg.

The Probe Research survey, conducted on behalf of the Amalgamated Transit Union 1505, shows 79 percent of Winnipeg residents want the province to restore its 50-50 funding deal with the city.

A Winnipeg Transit Supervisor is recovering in hospital after being assaulted on Thursday evening.

An eastbound bus was stopped at Portage Avenue and Colony Street when three males boarded at approximately 8 p.m. The supervisor told one of the males that he did not have sufficient funds. At hearing this, all three became verbally aggressive. When the supervisor requested they leave the bus, the males began assaulting the supervisor and dragged him off the bus and continued assaulting him on the street.

Mayoral candidate Jenny Motkaluk believes there’s a better way to improve Winnipeg Transit, but bus rapid transit isn’t the way.

The business consultant said Friday she would stop ongoing construction of BRT if elected mayor this fall, saying buses are running empty to under-used BRT stations.
