Wildfires Force More Than 2,000 to Flee Manitoba Communities

Canadian Red CrossMore than 2,000 people have been evacuated in northern Manitoba due to wildfires continuing to spread.

The evacuation orders were issued Thursday afternoon by the communities of Easterville and Chemawawin First Nation, 450 kilometres north of Winnipeg, due to smoke and threat from a fire that has moved to within half a kilometre of the community.

Manitoba Students Connect in ‘Day of Pink’

Canadian Red Cross - Day of PinkStudents at five Manitoba schools will connect today for Canadian Red Cross’s Pink Day.

Pink Day co-founder Travis Price will present to students at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, while others from schools in MacGregor, St. Norbert, Black River and Wanipigow join in via a live stream.

Also speaking to the students will be Winnipeg Blue Bomber Matt Bucknor, who has received bullying prevention training from the Red Cross and has been delivering that training to students in parts of Manitoba.

Students Push Anti-Bully Message in Red Cross Film Fest

Films were selected from schools across the province, and all have been nominated in their respective age categories. The short films share perspectives on bullying prevention and building respectful relationships.

The Park Theatre will host the screenings, with the most popular film receiving the RBC Believes in Kids Viewers’ Choice Award at the festival.

Red Cross Pink Shirts Sold at London Drugs

The Canadian Red Cross is making its distinctive pink shirts available for purchase at a retail store for the first time in Winnipeg.

The shirts are part of Pink Day in Manitoba, meant to globally recognize bullying prevention days on February 24 and April 13.

“In the past, the shirts have only been available online and had to be ordered weeks in advance to arrive in time for Pink Day,” said Rebecca Ulrich, Canadian Red Cross provincial education manager.

Mascots Compete in Red Cross Scavenger Hunt

Canadian Red CrossWinnipeg mascots will go toe-to-toe today in a fun scavenger hunt in support of the Canadian Red Cross.

Four teams will compete in the emergency preparedness event, including the Winnipeg Police Service (Copper), the Winnipeg Goldeyes (Goldie), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Buzz and Boomer) and the Red Cross itself.

The teams will race around the Polo Park Walmart collecting items to complete a ready-to-go disaster preparedness kit. The contest will demonstrate the importance of having a kit ready before a disaster strikes and what items are important to have in case of an emergency.

Canadian Red CrossA provincial manager with the disaster management arm of the Manitoba government has flown to Germany to respond to the current refugee and migrant crisis.

Cailin Hodder departed Monday night and will be working as part of the Canadian Red Cross efforts in the country.

Hodder, an experienced shelter manager from Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey in 2012 and in Alberta as part of the Saskatchewan wildfire evacuations earlier this year, will be taking her experience to assist the German Red Cross at a camp in that country.

Red Cross Joins Forces with Walmart for Annual Campaign

Canadian Red CrossThe Canadian Red Cross and Walmart stores across the country are teaming up beginning today to help raise funds for Canadians preparing for and dealing with disasters.

Until October 23, all Canadian Walmart stores — including 15 in Manitoba — will ask customers if they wish to make a financial donation to support the Red Cross.

“We appreciate the unwavering generosity of Walmart’s Manitoba shoppers, who have donated so much to the Walmart campaign in past years,” said Shawn Feely, Canadian Red Cross provincial director for Manitoba.

“All contributions made in Manitoba, stay in Manitoba and ensure we can provide disaster response for people in need. The donations will also allow us to help prepare Manitobans for emergencies.”
