Winnipeg radio host-turned-podcaster Marty Gold has a new outlet to take politicians to task.

The former KICK FM broadcaster will host “City Circus” on Shaw TV beginning tonight as part of a 13-week series on the community access channel.

The show — featuring local political cartoonist Graham Hnatiuk of Progressive Winnipeg — will highlight citizen journalism and include pundits and insiders who will discuss civic and provincial affairs catering to Winnipeggers. A one-hour town hall special will cap off the 30-minute series after its run.

“Community access television provides a chance for citizen journalists to provide balance to mainstream media reporting that is dominated by 12 second soundbites and dumbed-down news coverage,” Gold said. “Since the civic election, Winnipeg has seen a shift towards increasing demands by taxpayers for public consultation, transparency and accountability from politicians.”

Gold spent four years at 92.9 KICK FM on the airwaves at Red River College before being let go in 2010. He currently hosts “The Great Canadian Talk Show” podcast and writes for various news publications.

“City Circus” will air every Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., with reruns airing throughout the week.

Marty Gold Hosts Show with Live Audience (VIDEO)

Outspoken Winnipeg radio host Marty Gold held court Tuesday night at the Norwood Community Centre, taping a podcast version of “The Great Canadian Talk Show.”

About 50 people bought tickets at $20 a pop to see the former KICK FM personality in action to dish it out to the decision makers at Red River College.

Gold revealed a number of documents and e-mails to show he was wrongfully terminated from his position at the Princess Street campus, which he held for four years.

Since being let go in early November, Gold has maintained his popular TGCTS blog, as well as stayed relevant by recording frequent podcasts. Many of his show’s local sponsors, who were by his side on the airwaves, have also followed him online.

Former KICK FM radio personality Marty Gold has been podcasting ever since his show was cancelled nearly a month ago, continuing to dish out his views on civic issues and policy.

The outspoken alternative media host is now planning to host a live podcast version of “The Great Canadian Talk Show” with a studio audience. Quite the contrast from his four years over at the Red River College Princess Street campus.

The “Stand Up for Free Speech” event is planned for the Norwood Community Centre on Tuesday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Special guests are slated, including regular characters from the show, such as Spirited Kenny.

“I will be revealing surprising documents from insiders that will prove that the reasons for the cancelation by the KICK FM Board are a cover-up, and there was no issue with students needing more air time,” Gold said in a statement. “There are special interests who put political pressure on the College to get their appointees on the KICK BOD (Board of Directors) to find a way to silence the voices of the community, and we have the proof.”

Tickets are $20 each and are available at CDI College, 280 Main Street, at the door, or by e-mailing martygoldlive@gmail.com.

KICK FM Fills Marty Gold’s Old Time Slot

Listeners used to listening to 92.9 KICK FM on weekdays won’t have to tune out completely now that Marty Gold is off the air.

The Red River College student-run station is tweaking its programming schedule to fill the void between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Fellow show “The Mop” (Musings on Politics) will be moved to a new time at the request of station manager Rick Baverstock.

The show will also be filling in for other empty time slots as programming is reviewed by the Board of Directors.

On its website, KICK FM said in a blog post that the cancellation of “The Great Canadian Talk Show” was a move to “re-focus on the station’s role as an instructural resource.”

Opening up the schedule is said to allow students more opportunity to hone their craft on the airwaves during primetime hours.

Marty Gold’s KICK FM Talk Show Cancelled

Marty Gold’s popular afternoon radio talk show on 92.9 KICK FM has been pulled.

The news came Monday, after “The Great Canadian Talk Show” — which operates out of Red River College’s Princess Street campus — didn’t take to the air and listeners started asking questions.

Reached by phone Monday night, Gold told ChrisD.ca the cancellation was an attack on free speech.

No reason was given for the cancellation, which Gold said was served to him in a short statement read by college officials.

Known for telling it like it is and being the unofficial king of alternative media, Gold has made a name for himself with his no B.S. style of reporting.

Gold said there is more to the story than meets the eye behind the cancellation, but wouldn’t elaborate at this time.

People from across Canada have followed the show online and Gold says the audience is outraged. “It’s an attack on the censorship of alternative media in Canada,” he said.

On his blog, Gold urged listeners to join a Facebook page to protest the censorship.

The college provides KICK FM with approximately $50,000 a year in funding.

A spokesperson for the college says decisions on programming are made by the non-profit corporation who runs the station, including the Board of Directors and station manager.

Much more to come on this story.
