Ballet Cuts Ties with Former Winnipeg Choreographer Facing Nude Photo Allegations

VANCOUVER – Ballet Victoria has cut ties with a choreographer after renewed media attention to allegations that he took nude photographs of underage dancers in the 1980s and 1990s.

Bruce Monk was fired by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 2015 after Maclean’s reported that several women were co-operating with a Winnipeg police investigation into photos he took of them as teenage dancers.

Trouba Joins Scheifele in Walk-On at RWB’s ‘Nutcracker’

Another Winnipeg Jets player has been added to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Nutcracker walk-on roster.

Jacob Trouba will join Mark Scheifele on Friday, December 30 for his on-stage debut. The two will swap ice skates for rollerblades during the shinny hockey game scene at the Centennial Concert Hall.

WINNIPEG — Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet may have found success on stage during the 2015-16 season, but behind the scenes, it was a different story financially.

The RWB incurred a more than $1 million deficit due to higher than anticipated touring costs and ticket sales lower than projected.

Fundraising revenue also took a hit, ending the RWB’s fiscal year on June 30, 2016 with a deficit of $1,116,299.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is treating its audiences to Christmas in July during this season’s Ballet in the Park.

The Nutcracker, a tradition for the RWB, will be sampled during performances July 27-29 at Assiniboine Park.

The free family-friendly event attracts more than 20,000 people annually to the Lyric Theatre stage.

As part of Sharing Dance Day 2016, the RWB is putting on free activities outside its building between 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

The free event is a promotion for the nationwide movement celebrating dance, including the ability to improve access to quality dance programs to those who need it most.

During this time, Edmonton Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue will be temporarily closed from noon until 3:30 p.m. Pedestrian access will be maintained, but motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes.

RWB Looking for Fresh Dancers in Open Auditions

RWB - Royal Winnipeg BalletLocal dancers will get the chance to show off their skills in front of professionals at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in the new year.

The RWB is holding auditions on Sunday, January 24 for all three of its training programs: the ballet academic program for students in grades 6 to 12, and RWB School’s two graduate programs, the aspirant program and the teacher training program.

Students who auditions are doing so to enter the RWB School Professional Division summer session (July 2016) in Winnipeg, which serves as the audition phase for acceptance into the regular session (September 2016).

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s upcoming production of “Nutcracker” will include 12 special guests to grace the stage in walk-on roles.

Our very own managing editor Chris D. will join Travel Manitoba president Colin Ferguson on stage later this month.

The show runs December 19-28 at the Centennial Concert Hall.
