Goldeyes Pitch in to Help Winnipeg Harvest

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are pitching in to help Winnipeg Harvest during this busy time of year.

Staff from the baseball club’s front office, including mascot Goldie, will help assemble holiday cheer packages at the food bank on Tuesday morning.

“We are thrilled at the support we have had from the Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball club over the years,” said David Northcott, executive director of Winnipeg Harvest.

Loblaw Stores Helping Winnipeg Harvest Fill Holiday Food Banks

Winnipeg HarvestShoppers to Real Canadian Superstore are lending a hand this holiday season to fill the many food hampers at Winnipeg Harvest.

Food bank usage in Manitoba has increased 53 percent in the past eight years, prompting Loblaw stores to collect donations for the food bank.

“Donations from local stores and food drives are so critical at this time of year,” said David Northcott with Winnipeg Harvest.

Summer is usually the slowest time of year for food banks, but Winnipeg Harvest’s shelves are stocked a little fuller thanks to Catelli Foods.

Approximately 6,780 boxes of pasta were delivered to Winnipeg Harvest, equalling  27,120 servings of food for those in need.   Continue Reading

Red River Valley Swap Meet Supporting Winnipeg Harvest

Vintage rides will be glistening on Sunday, May 15 when the Manitoba Classic and Antique Auto Club puts on the 19th annual Red River Valley Swap Meet.

The show and shine is open to all vehicles 25 years and older, street roads, modified and special interest vehicles.

The Swap Meet is co-hosted by the Red River Exhibition Association and supports Winnipeg Harvest. All visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or donation.

Pasta Cookbook Stirring Up Appetites for Winnipeg Harvest

A new cookbook is raising funds and stirring appetites in support of Winnipeg Harvest.

“Pasta to the Rescue: Hot Summer Dishes for Busy Families” features 15 top Canadian chefs sharing their culinary delights with readers across Canada.

Fairmont Winnipeg executive chef Eraj Jayawickreme is one of those chefs who have put together mouth-watering recipes for the digital cookbook. Catelli Foods will donate servings of pasta to Canada’s food banks, including Winnipeg Harvest, for every download.

Chef Jayawickreme’s recipe — a herbed shrimp truffle capellini pasta — incorporates kale and rapini, bitter tastes he said punctuate a dish.

Winnipeg Students Take ‘Poverty Challenge’

Winnipeg HarvestStudents at Vincent Massey Collegiate have taken a poverty pledge to try and survive on $3.96 a day.

The students are part of a Winnipeg Harvest initiative to see the struggles those face in poverty on a daily basis.

“I took the pledge because I, like many people want to help make a difference, but once again like many people, don’t know what my help is changing,” said a Grade 10 student by the name of Shloke.

Winnipeg Harvest Facing $100,000 Shortfall

Winnipeg HarvestWinnipeg Harvest is staring down a grim $100,000 shortfall this year in its program that feeds hungry babies.

The program buys infant formula, which is the only food the Winnipeg food bank purchases itself. The rest of the food on its shelves come solely from community donations.

An average of 1,600 infants per month are fed through the Feeding Hungry Babies program. Harvest spends $200,000 annually on such baby formula.

“Infancy is such a critical time for growth and development. Proper nutrition is absolutely essential for babies to get off to a healthy start,” said Dr. Joyce Slater, associate professor in the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

Winnipeg Harvest Collecting Donations at WSO, RWB Events

Winnipeg HarvestWinnipeg Harvest will be the beneficiary of donations provided by the generous arts community this holiday season.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Centennial Centre Corporation and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet have partnered with the food bank to collect donations now until December 29.

Bins will be located in the lobby at all performances. Patrons who bring a tin for the bin to any WSO performance will receive a coupon valid for one half-price ticket with the purchase of another at regular price.
