Winnipeg Police Warn Public of Bitcoin Scam

According to the Winnipeg Police Service Financial Crime Unit, Bitcoin ATMs are leaving clients short-changed.

The scam involves posters that are placed near Bitcoin ATMs, stating the ATM is “in the development of new software.” The poster advises clients not purchase or deposit bitcoin into their own wallet. Instead, the client should deposit bitcoins through a QR code on the poster.

Just after midnight Thursday, North District general patrol officers were alerted to an assault in progress.

Air1, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Flight Operations Unit, was dispatched. Two males were spotted on the east side of Arlington Street near Logan Avenue. Officers responded to the area, and they found a lone victim. The officers arrested two males – one was still armed with a weapon.
