Former NHL Agent Charged After Allegedly Defrauding Players of $12M

An ex-NHL agent has been charged by Winnipeg police after alleging defrauding former Ottawa Senators Chris Phillips and Dany Heatley out of $12 million.

Police say Stacey McAlpine, 54, used funds provided by the victims to invest on their behalf. Instead, police say McAlpine used the cash for personal business and provided both players with fraudulent account statements for their bogus investments.

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Bisons will turn to Brett Stovin as their captain when the Herd opens up the regular hockey season this weekend.

The third-year forward was introduced Thursday along with four alternate captains as Manitoba welcomes the UBC Thunderbirds to town.

The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed forward Nikolaj Ehlers to a seven-year extension worth $42 million.

The 21-year-old was drafted by the Jets in the first round (ninth overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft and is entering his third year with the club.

Fans attending Wednesday’s Winnipeg Jets home opener at Bell MTS Place will notice a difference in how their cell phones work within the building.

Bell MTS made upgrades to its LTE network in the arena over the summer, more than tripling the capacity for wireless customers. A common frustration of those who attend events in the building is slower speeds or periods of non-connectivity given the volume of other users in the vicinity. Similar headaches have been shared by football fans at Investors Group Field in the past.

Winnipeg Jets fans not in attendance at Bell MTS Place will be able to catch 60 regular season games on TSN for the 2017-18 season.

The Jets and their host broadcaster released the upcoming TV and radio schedule on Friday, which kicks off on TSN3 October 9 when the Jets face the Edmonton Oilers.
