First it was Movember and now a select group of Winnipeg men will be sporting full-blown beards. Some ladies in the city may not appreciate facial hair, but in any event, it’s for a great cause.

The 2011 Beard Growing Contest is being held in anticipation for the Festival du Voyageur in February.

Men are encouraged to abandon their razor and let the whiskers do their thing to create either the Voyageur Beard (wild and woolly) or a groomed mustache or beard in the Novelty category.

Participants will be clean-shaven by Berns & Black Salon today between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Le Garage Café, 166 Provencher Boulevard.

Organizer Emili Bellefleur says the Garage is also offering a pint and dry ribs for $8 and a pork pulled sandwich for $5. Go for the shave, stay for the meal.

Registration is $35. For more information or to register, call Dave Parenteau at (204) 237-7692 or e-mail dparenteau@festivalvoyageur.mb.ca.

Proceeds from the contest will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
