Winnipeg residents will soon have a new way to reduce food waste in the city.
Beginning October 15, the City of Winnipeg and Compost Winnipeg will open 15 food waste drop-off stations. The stations will provide an interim solution for food waste disposal until the full Green Cart program launches in 2030.
“For every tonne of food waste diverted, we remove two tonnes of CO2 emissions,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “That’s why this initiative is so important. By partnering with Compost Winnipeg, we’re giving residents a convenient and immediate way to make a real difference while we gear up for the launch of the green cart program.”
Residents can collect food scraps using any container and drop them off at one of the designated stations, which include the three 4R Winnipeg Depots. Accepted materials can be stored in compostable bags or lined containers and dropped off for composting. Compost Winnipeg will manage the stations and transport the food waste to a compost facility.
The drop-off stations will operate until the Green Cart curbside collection program begins.
