Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew are trading politics for pucks in the Winnipeg 150 City vs. Province Hockey Game.
Scheduled for November 30 at Gateway Recreation Centre, the event celebrates the city’s 150th anniversary and echoes a similar matchup during Winnipeg’s centennial in 1974.
The friendly competition will see the mayor, city councillors, and city staff go up against the premier, provincial MLAs, and employees. The puck drops at 11:15 a.m., and admission is free. The first 250 attendees will receive complimentary hotdogs and drinks, courtesy of the City of Winnipeg.
“I can’t promise the hockey will be pretty, but municipal government is all about being scrappy and digging hard in the corners,” Gillingham said in a release. “We’re going to give it 110 percent and stick to the game plan.”
Adding to the fun, Winnipeg Free Press columnist Dan Lett will referee the match, keeping both sides in line, while LTI from 103.1 Virgin Radio’s “Ace Burpee Show” will provide play-by-play commentary. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations for Harvest Manitoba.
The hockey game is one of several events planned as part of the Winnipeg 150 celebrations.
