WINNIPEG — Manitoba Hydro is alerting customers to potential scams as postal service interruptions delay paper bill deliveries.
Customers without online accounts will receive automated calls or texts informing them of new bills and how to check their balances.
For security reasons, Manitoba Hydro emphasizes:
- Account balances will not be shared in automated messages.
- Hydro will not threaten disconnections or demand payments over the phone.
- Payments via credit cards, e-transfers, or cryptocurrency are not accepted.
Scammers may exploit the delays by impersonating Hydro employees through calls, texts, or emails, often creating urgency by falsely claiming power disconnections.
To stay safe, customers are encouraged to verify billing information through Manitoba Hydro’s customer service at 1-888-MB-HYDRO (1-888-624-9376) or by creating an online account at hydro.mb.ca/signup.
Payments can be made online, at financial institutions, or at Northern Stores in northern Manitoba.
