The City of Winnipeg has abandoned an unpopular pilot project that would have changed when plows hit the streets after a snowstorm.
The project called for temporarily raising the residential snow-clearing threshold from 10 cm to 15 cm next winter.
Based on public feedback opposed to the idea — mainly highlighting road safety and accessibility concerns — the city has scrapped the idea.
“We’ve heard loud and clear from Winnipeggers that maintaining our current snow clearing standards is important,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
“While the pilot was intended to explore potential efficiencies, it’s clear it does not align with the needs of our residents, so we’ll make that change.”
The city says its Public Works Department will continue seeking opportunities to enhance snow-clearing operations and control costs without compromising service quality.
