The Manitoba government is ordering Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries (MBLL) to stop selling American alcohol, Premier Wab Kinew announced Sunday. The move comes in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Trump’s tariff tax is an attack on Canadians,” said Kinew. “We support the federal response to these tariffs and here in Manitoba, we’re stopping the sale of American products at Manitoba liquor marts. How you choose to spend your money is one of the most important decisions you as a consumer can make. There are plenty of great Manitoba breweries and distilleries to support instead.”
Starting Tuesday, February 4, MBLL will remove American alcohol from store shelves and stop placing new orders. The province also plans to introduce additional support for Manitoba businesses and workers affected by the tariffs later this week.
“This is a question about national identity. This is a question about who we are as Canadians and Manitobans,” added Kinew.
“If you have to switch to Crown Royal as part of that patriotism, I think that’s a pretty good deal.”
Manitoba’s U.S. Trade Council will meet Monday to discuss further actions. Businesses and workers impacted by the tariffs can contact the provincial tariff hotline at 1-877-827-4330 or visit manitoba.ca/tariffresponse for more information.
