The barricades at Portage & Main have come down as crews continue work at the intersection to allow for pedestrian traffic this summer.
In an update on Friday, the City of Winnipeg said underground and utility work is being done as the project enters a new phase.
“The project is on time, on budget, and traffic is still moving well through the intersection,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “I’m looking forward to the intersection reopening to pedestrians alongside the launch of our new transit network as both are important steps toward a more connected and accessible downtown.”
Lane closures will remain unchanged until the current phase of work is complete.
New lane closures are expected in April when work to rebuild the centre medians and other utility adjustments begin.
It’s expected that the intersection will open to pedestrians by July 1, 2025.
