Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man sustained serious injuries during an arrest by Brandon police.

The incident occurred on January 9 when Brandon officers attended a home in the 1400 block of Applewood Bay to execute an order under the Mental Health Act. Upon arrival, officers saw the man holding two large objects. When informed of his arrest, he retreated further into the residence.

Police confronted him in the living room, where a struggle ensued, and force was used to take him into custody. After being handcuffed and placed in a police cruiser, the man complained of rib pain and was taken to the Brandon Regional Health Centre for X-rays before being released back to police custody.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is asking anyone with information or video footage to contact them at 1-844-667-6060.
