WINNIPEG — The University of Manitoba Faculty Association has set a March 6 bargaining deadline, warning that a strike could begin on March 10 if no agreement is reached.
The union, representing 1,300 professors, instructors, and librarians, says key issues like workload, salaries, and childcare remain unresolved despite negotiations since August.
“Current and future students expect a high-quality education when they enrol here. That quality depends on hiring, and keeping, talented professors,” said UMFA president Erik Thomson.
“But faculty have been leaving the university, or rejecting job offers to come here, because salaries aren’t competitive with other universities across Canada.”
Negotiations resume on March 3 and 4.
The UMFA last went on strike in 2021, which lasted 35 days until members ratified a new agreement with the university.
