The Winnipeg Wesmen men’s volleyball team made history Saturday, claiming their first-ever Canada West championship with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears at the Duckworth Centre.
Led by Isaiah Olfert’s 16 kills, the Wesmen defeated Alberta 25-20, 25-20, 25-21, overcoming a third-set deficit to seal the win in front of a sold-out home crowd. Luke Lodewyks added 15 kills and six digs, while the team posted an impressive .396 attack percentage.
“We do a lot of preparation — physical and mental preparation — so it’s just really great to see the guy execute when it matters and I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Wesmen head coach Chris Voth.
“I have no words. I’m speechless. The guys played amazing. They did everything that I asked for, and more.”
The victory likely secures Winnipeg the top seed at the upcoming U Sports National Championship, which begins March 21 in Brandon.
