Flames engulf a cottage in Falcon Lake, Manitoba, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. (RCMP HANDOUT)
A cottage in Falcon Lake was destroyed by fire on Tuesday evening, but it appears to be unrelated to wildfires in the area.
Manitoba RCMP and local firefighters responded to the structure in Block 11 at around 8:50 p.m. to find the cottage completely engulfed in flames.
It’s believed the property was formerly owned by disgraced fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who sold it in 2021.
Nygard, 83, was sentenced in September 2024 to 11 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting four women in Toronto between the late 1980s and 2005.
The blaze was extinguished with help from the Manitoba Wildfire Service. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Anyone with information is asked to contact Falcon Lake RCMP at (204) 349-2588 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
Recent wildfire closures and evacuations for the south Whiteshell, including Falcon Lake and Barren Lake, ended on Wednesday morning.
