Manitoba Public Insurance is warning drivers about the increasing issue of peeling licence plates, saying damaged or unreadable plates pose a safety risk for all road users.
“Keeping your licence plate in good repair keeps our roadways safe, and helps you identify other vehicles if you are in a collision or need to report them to a necessary agency,” said
Maria Campos with MPI.
Under provincial law, plates must be clearly visible and unobstructed. Drivers caught with unreadable plates could face a $113 fine.
MPI offers a free plate replacement within five years of issue. After that, a replacement pair costs $15. Officials caution against DIY fixes such as using nail polish or markers, urging drivers to visit an MPI service centre or broker for proper replacement.
