A firefighter was assaulted early Friday morning while responding to a vehicle fire in the 300 block of Princess Street.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews approached the scene at around 1:20 a.m. to find a man armed with a metal pole struck their fire engine and later hit a firefighter in the face, causing minor injuries. Police arrested the man at the scene and determined he was also responsible for setting the pickup truck on fire.

Lorne Albert Hofer, 25, has been charged with multiple offences including assault with a weapon, arson, possession of incendiary material, and mischief. He remains in custody.
