The Winnipeg Sea Bears have appointed Mike Raimbault as the team’s new general manager and head coach, replacing Mike Taylor, whose contract is ending.
Raimbault, a longtime fixture in Manitoba basketball, will continue as head coach of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen men’s team while leading the Sea Bears. He has guided the Wesmen to back-to-back Canada West finals and a program-best 16-4 record last season.
A Brandon native, Raimbault previously coached at Brandon University, won a national championship with the UNBC Timberwolves, and has served as a Sea Bears assistant since the franchise launched.
Team owner David Asper said the move reflects a commitment to developing Canadian coaches and ensuring year-round leadership in Winnipeg.
“Mike Taylor did an amazing job for us but we feel we need some prairie dirt, Canadian shield and wheatfield soul in our DNA at this time,” Asper said.
Raimbault said he’s “honoured and excited” to take on the role while continuing with the Wesmen. “I can’t wait to get to work,” he said.
The Sea Bears thanked Taylor for his leadership, including guiding the team to its first playoff appearance in 2023 and helping establish professional basketball in Manitoba.
