The Winnipeg Sea Bears have announced that Jason Smith will transition out of his role as president over the coming months.
Smith, who helped establish the franchise and led the team through its first three seasons, will shift to a consulting role while focusing more on his company, Smith Events.
Under the new structure, team owner and chairman David Asper will take over as president and CEO. Smith will continue to provide strategic guidance during the transition.
“I look forward to supporting David and the team through this transition and into the next chapter, while also returning focus to Smith Events and other projects that allow me to contribute in new ways,” Smith said in a release.
The transition marks the start of the next growth phase for the Sea Bears, who concluded the 2025 CEBL season with an 11–13 record, securing the fourth seed in the Western Conference. Despite being the host team for Championship Weekend, they were eliminated by the Calgary Surge.
