Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham is urging the federal government to act on bail reform, saying residents are “fed up” with repeat violent offenders being released back into the community.
In a video message released Friday, Gillingham said chronic offenders pose a threat to frontline workers, the economy, and public safety. He noted a recent discussion with federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser, who confirmed bail reform legislation is planned, but with no clear timeline or details.
To highlight the issue, the mayor announced a new weekly “Repeat Offender Bulletin” showcasing cases of habitual offenders in Winnipeg.
“There is a limit to what law enforcement and social interventions can accomplish, as long as our justice system keeps releasing high-risk o?enders back into the community,” Gillingham said.
He also encouraged residents to press the federal government by contacting their MPs or emailing the Justice Minister Sean Fraser directly: mcu@justice.gc.ca.
“Be polite. Be non-partisan. But be firm,” Gillingham added. “Let them know that Canadians expect a justice system that protects victims, holds repeat offenders accountable, and helps keep our communities safe.”
