A Charleswood park has been renamed to celebrate one of Winnipeg’s curling greats.
Berkley Square Park at 635 Berkley Street is now officially Dawn McEwen Park, honouring the Olympic gold medalist and longtime lead for Team Jennifer Jones.
“Having a park renamed after me is really humbling,” said Dawn McEwen. “It’s more than just a park, it’s a place where our community comes together, and it’s extra special because I can bring my children here to enjoy it too. I’m so grateful to be part of this neighbourhood and to see the park continue to be a place everyone can enjoy”.
McEwen was born in Ottawa, Ontario and moved to Winnipeg in 2007. She was the long-time lead for Team Jones, curling out of the St. Vital Curling Club. She is a five-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion, two-time world champion, and 2014 Winter Olympics gold medalist.
The new signage, costing $2,600, was funded through the Riel Community Committee Land Dedication Reserve Fund.
