The rural municipality of Headingley will get a new water reservoir and pumping station as part of the first wave of projects announced through the federal government’s new infrastructure fund.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who launched the $51 billion fund last year in response to growing economic instability threats and tariffs.
The fund, which emphasises large, community-led infrastructure projects, will be spent over 10 years for various projects.
Winnipeg West MP Doug Eyolfson said the feds would contribute $5 million to Headingley’s project.
It will add 3,600 cubic metres of water storage and 65 litres per second of pumping capacity to the RM’s current system. The upgraded capacity will help support the construction of nearly 1,800 housing units, he said, and will help ensure future growth in nearby First Nations communities who will share in the supply.
“This announcement … provides additional fire protection ensuring our community is safe and thriving long into the future,” said Headingley Mayor Jim Robson in a statement.
A total of 13 initial projects were announced for a cost of about $300 million with more on the way, said the federal government.
