The City of Winnipeg has kicked off its annual spring cleanup, with dedicated crews already deployed downtown for a four-week blitz ahead.
Outside of the core area, the city-wide effort begins April 19, with more than 300 pieces of equipment and approximately 500 workers sweeping the entire street network over six weeks.
The city says the cleanup will include roadways, bridges, sidewalks, pathways, boulevards, medians, and municipal parks. The annual yard waste program follows the week of May 4.
With a focus already on downtown, four crews began work earlier this week, targeting graffiti removal in partnership with the Downtown and Exchange Business Improvement Zones, broken or faded signage replacement, pressure-washing of park equipment, and hand-sweeping of debris.
“Every spring, our crews put in a huge effort to clean up Winnipeg after the winter, and this year we’re also putting extra focus on downtown to make sure it looks its best for residents, workers, and visitors,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, in a statement.
The downtown blitz is being described as a trial program aimed at improving the visual experience for residents and tourists heading into the spring and summer season.
