Red River North MLA Jeff Wharton has announced he will not seek the Progressive Conservative nomination in the next provincial election.

Wharton has represented the constituency since winning election in 2016. Following boundary changes in 2019, he was nominated and elected in the newly created Red River North riding and re-elected in 2023.

“Family has always remained at the centre of this journey,” said Wharton, in a statement. “A 41-year partnership with my wife, the joy of raising two daughters, and the continued blessing of five grandchildren have shaped a deep appreciation for the importance of time, community, and giving back in meaningful ways.”

During his time at the legislature, he held several cabinet portfolios, including municipal relations, crown services, environment, climate and parks, and economic development, investment, trade and mining.

Wharton said the decision was made with the full support of his wife, Mickey, and family, and expressed confidence in PC leader Obby Khan heading into the next election.

The party will hold a nomination meeting for Red River North in due course.
