Live Thoroughbred racing returns to Assiniboia Downs on May 12 with the first post to kick off a 50-day meet.
The Downs held a pre-season luncheon on Friday, where officials previewed the 2026 thoroughbred racing season.
“We are chomping at the bit to get the 2026 season started,” said Darren Dunn, CEO of Assiniboia Downs. “Even though the Manitoba weather is still trying to figure out if it’s winter or spring, the energy on the backside is heating up.”
For the second straight year, the Winnipeg oval is offering takeouts below 20 percent across all bet types, with the average across all pools sitting at 18.34 percent — among the most competitive in North America.
“We’ve built a betting menu that truly respects the horseplayer, and between our low takeouts, new pool and guarantees, there has never been a better time to play the Downs,” added Dunn.
New for 2026, the track is introducing a $3 Prime Pick 3, featuring both an early and late option on every program. The $1 minimum Pick 4 will also now carry a $50,000 guaranteed pool from opening day.
Fans in attendance also have a shot at a prize wheel spin if the longest shot on the board wins the final race of the night. Prizes range from $100 up to a $10,000 grand prize.
First post on opening night is 7:40 p.m. CT.
Racing takes place Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with select Monday cards throughout the meet. Admission and parking are free. More information is available at ASDowns.com.
