Officials are reminding drivers to slow down in construction zones as crews get to work repairing city and provincial streets.
In Winnipeg, crews are preparing to work on dozens of roads this season, which means heavy equipment and construction crews.
In 2025, 62 road workers were injured because of traffic, up from 40 the year before, said the SAFE Roads committee, which is part of Workers Compensation Manitoba.
“Our goal isn’t just to reduce incidents, it’s to eliminate them entirely,” said Chris Lorenc, president of the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association and committee chair. “Every worker deserves a workplace where safety is never a question.”
In Manitoba, speed limits in construction zones are posted and are lower than the typical street speed. If drivers are caught speeding in construction zones, fines are doubled, even if workers aren’t present.
