A woman who has spent more than 20 years protecting children is Manitoba’s new teacher watchdog.

Noni Classen was named by Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt as Manitoba’s new commissioner of teacher professional conduct.

“Ms. Classen brings an exceptional depth of experience to this role,” said Schmidt. “Her distinguished record in child protection and her leadership in developing national safeguarding frameworks will ensure that every student in our province learns in a safe, respectful and supportive environment.”

Classen’s background includes two decades at the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, 10 years with the Louis Riel School Division and holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. She replaces Bobbi Taillefer.

Her job will be to oversee the process when a complaint is made about teachers and certified educators, said the province. She begins May 18.
