It’s a slam dunk for the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball program.
John Loewen, a Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame inductee, former MLA, and ex-Bisons men’s basketball player, announced $1 million donation Monday — the largest gift in Bison Sports history.
“This gift is really a way of saying thank you and of helping ensure future student-athletes have the same meaningful experiences, connections and opportunities that meant so much to me,” said Loewen.
The gift will support the program over the next 10 to 12 years, funding everything from equipment, apparel, and player development technology to facility upgrades, recruitment, nutrition, travel, and the establishment of work-study programs for student-athletes.
Head coach Kirby Schepp called the donation “game-changing,” saying it positions the Bisons to offer the best student-athlete experience in Canada.
Loewen’s donation will also better position the Bisons to host major events, including potential U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Championships.
Expenses from the gift’s trust fund will be overseen by Schepp and director of athletics and recreation Gene Muller.
