The Manitoba government has made immediate safety changes to the intersection of Provincial Trunk Highway 110 and Richmond Avenue in Brandon following a fatal collision on May 27.
The province announced that the intersection has been converted to an all-way stop effective Tuesday, as an interim measure ahead of the planned activation of traffic signals interconnected with the nearby railway crossing.
Additional measures include reducing approach speeds on all legs of the intersection to 70 km/h, installing and enhancing rumble strips, closing parallel turning lanes, and activating traffic signals in flashing red mode in all directions until full operation. The signals are expected to be fully operational this summer, pending completion of rail interconnection work.
A review concluded that signals linked to the railway crossing would improve safety at the intersection.
The driver involved in the May 27 fatal collision was charged the following day with dangerous driving causing death. Media reports say the transport company involved wasn’t licensed to operate on Manitoba roadways after having its safety certificate pulled in 2021.
The charges haven’t been tested in court.
